Week 21

Since we have started a new reading unit on Mystery, our reading response homework will be different from the nonfiction work we have been doing in the past months. Your child has a new menu with two types of entries to choose from. There is also a green sheet with the menu, a checklist, and samples of how the mystery response can go. Your child should have their green sheet in the reading response notebook to refer to as they work on their response.

Here's what is coming next week:

  •  We will have Dance on Monday. Please be aware that we have this at first period. If your child is late to school, they should go to the MultiMedia room where we will be until 9:20am.
  • We will have our Chapter 7 math test on Monday. Due to an overpacked schedule this week, we had to postpone the test from today.
  •  A note went home about the activity we will be doing this Family Friday, which is a craft from the Chinese culture. A link to the Youtube video demonstrating this craft will be posted on this blog by Saturday morning. Please check it out through our playlist on the right.
Have a great weekend!

Week 20

We had an excellent time at the Chen Dance Center in Thursday. The kids got to watch and participate in a great dance performance. There was much to learn about the Chinese culture and Chinese writing in particular. We want to thank our chaperones for helping us move safely and comfortably to our destinations!

Here's what to expect for next week:

  • We are continuing our BAX Dance enrichment on Monday. Please remember to dress your child in comfortable clothes and avoid footed tights since shoes and socks have to be removed.
  •  There will be an excursion to the Armory on Tuesday.
  • We will have our Chapter 7 math test on Friday.
Have a safe and cozy weekend!

Week 19

Please check your child's homework folder weekly. As many of you know, each Friday, there will be a short comment attached to the bottom of your child's homework sheet. This is just a brief comment on your child's week and what he or she is working on in class. After you have read it, please sign the comment so that I know you have seen it. Some parents have also used the space to add compliments or suggestions to their child, which is a great way to support your child's efforts in school. If your child is not giving you the blue folder, please ask for it.

Here's what to expect for next week:

  • Schools are closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King's Day.
  • We have begun a Social Studies unit on China this week. We have learned some basic facts about China in nonfiction reading and are also examining the folktales of the culture. Children were also given an opportunity this week to learn about Chinese writing and now know a couple of words in Cantonese. This upcoming week, we will focus on the geography of China and will look at special landforms and landmarks. To help us, we ask that you contribute some salt dough for our mapmaking activity this week. Your child has a letter with instructions for this in the homework folder.
  • We are going on our first trip this Thursday. Our chaperones will be Tula's mom, Emilio's dad and Nardya's mom.
Have a fantastic three-day weekend!

Week 17

Welcome back!

Here's our Weekly Report from our bloggers, Jasey and Jane:
On Monday, we started to publish our information books. We also started to study China. On Tuesday, we reviewed division. Our shelter projects were finished on Wednesday so that we could show them off during the museum walk. We continued to study for our division test on Thursday and finally, we showed our shelters on Friday!

We presented our Shelters today and we want to thank our encouraging audience for coming to our first Family Friday of 2016.
Here's what to expect for next week:
  • Third Grade begins its Dance Enrichment on Monday. We will work with a teaching artist from Brooklyn Art Exchange, Janet. The focus of this program is to encourage children to explore the cultures of China and Africa through dance and music. We will be going at first period so please help your child arrive on time. Students will be asked to remove their shoes and socks. We ask students to not wear footed tights because they would be difficult to remove.
  • We have our Chapter 6 Math test on Monday.
  • I will be at a Teacher's College workshop on Tuesday so I will not be present.
Please send in the payment for our trip to MOCA as soon as possible so that we can pay the deposit and keep our reservation.
