Week 14

This was an eventful week! We went on our first trip to the Brooklyn Museum this year and learned a lot about how a home reflects our culture.

We also had our highly anticipated Cultural Luncheon! It was a truly a sumptuous feast and the children were adventurous eaters who tried so many different dishes. We really appreciate all the contributions of our wonderful families!

 Here’s what’s happening next week:
  • We will have Armory on Tuesday.
  • Third graders will have Tiny Scientist this Wednesday.
  • Family Friday will have students make greeting cards for Gods Love We Deliver.
  • We will also have the Chapter 4 Math test. The test will focus on Multiplication facts and strategies that help us learn the facts. The 7 , 8 and 9 facts can be especially tricky. Here are some links to help you study those facts with your child:

Week 13

We had the best weather for our Tuesday's Nature walk in Prospect Park. Our tiny scientists got to explore the park and observe forces in action around the park. They saw children, animals and even the wind exert a force to help move things. We really appreciate Rafa's and Jack's mom for walking us over and helping us see all the science around us!

Here's what to expect for next week:

  • We are heading to the Brooklyn Museum on Wednesday. Many parents have volunteered to come on the trip. Please expect a note in your child's folder about whether you are one of the five selected to go. There will also be a note letting you know if you were not selected.
  • Friday is the Cultural Luncheon! This event is highly anticipated by our children and many adults. We will also send notices and reminders home for everyone by Tuesday.

Week 12: Happy Thanksgiving!

It was great meeting up to chat with you during Parent Teacher Conferences. Of course, we will continue to communicate as we move forward this year and work together to help our children have a successful year. The feedback you have provided has been helpful to me as we take our next steps!

We are starting the next semester with some new units in may subjects. We have already begun immersing ourselves in the genre of Mystery in Reading. These exciting stories give us a chance to take the skills we have learned in fiction reading and strengthen them. Like all great detective teams, our children will be matched with a partner to read mysteries and use talk and collaboration strategies to read these stories with more attention and understanding.

In Math, we are spending more time learning the Multiplication facts. We have been making connections from the 2 times table to the 4 times table; from the 5 times table to the 10 times table by using the Doubles strategy. For example, if we know the fact  2 x 8 = 16, we can double it to solve 4 x 8 since 4 is double 2. Next week, we will use number properties to help us with trickier facts like the 7 times table. Here are some links to help your child practice multiplication facts:

In Social Studies, we have begun to explore the elements of Culture. Culture is defined as the way a group of people live and share a life together. This includes shelters, traditions, jobs, clothing and food. Our Cultural Luncheon will take place on November 30th and our kids are so proud as they talk about the dishes they will share. Please take this upcoming holiday as an opportunity to encourage your child to learn more about their family history.

We are continuing to examine how Balancing Forces are evident in our daily lives. Our Science unit has given our children the opportunity to explore magnetism and how it can be applied to tasks. We will next look at how the force of gravity helps to balance other forces.

Here's what else is happening next week:
  • It's Crazy Sock Day at PS 154! Show your school spirit by wearing silly socks! Our kindergarten class are spearheading a school wide sock drive. They will collect socks to donate to those in need at a local shelter. What a wonderful way to start our holiday season!
  • On Tuesday, we will take a nature walk in Prospect Park at 12:20- 1:10pm
  • We will have Tiny Scientist on Wednesday.
  • Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Week 11

There were quite a few forms sent out this week and hopefully your child has handed them to you.  life you have not seen them please check for the following:
  • Parent Teacher Conference request form. The tear off on the bottom must be returned so that we can set up an appointment to meet on Thursday to discuss your child's progress. Those of you who have returned the slip already have an appointment scheduled for you. Your child has a note in their homework folder with your time.
  • Cultural Luncheon forms. Please fill out the tear off at the bottom of the first page and send with your child on Tuesday when we return from Veterans Day. The second page should be sent in on Friday. It is important that we receive the second page so that your child and I can work on making a label to go with the dish you are sharing. The label will help anyone with an allergy or dietary preference make choices when we have our celebration.
Here's what else to expect next week:
  • We have the Chapter 3 math test on Tuesday. This test will review all the many ways multiplication is represented. Here are some links to help you review.
